Beyond Academics: The Role of Sports, Arts and Activities in School Education

Ask any successful adult what shaped them the most, and academics is rarely the only answer. Many point to a coach who taught them discipline, a music teacher who taught them patience, or a school play that helped them overcome stage fright. This is exactly why sports, arts and co curricular activities deserve as much attention as textbooks.

Physical activity does far more than keep children fit. Sports teach children how to handle both winning and losing gracefully, how to work as part of a team, and how to push through fatigue to reach a goal. These lessons rarely come from a classroom lecture. They come from experience, often on a field or court.

Arts, whether it is painting, music, dance or drama, give children a different kind of outlet. Not every child expresses themselves easily in words, and creative activities offer another language altogether. A shy child who struggles to speak up in class might find their voice through a paintbrush or on a stage, and that confidence often carries over into other areas of life.

At Rishikul Vidyapeeth, we treat these activities as core parts of school life rather than occasional add ons. Set across a large campus with facilities including a swimming pool and horse riding, alongside regular sports periods and art sessions, children get the chance to explore interests well beyond the syllabus and discover talents they may not have known they had.

There is also a practical side to this. Colleges and workplaces increasingly value candidates who show initiative, creativity and teamwork, not just high scores. A student who has led a debate team, played competitive sports or organised a school event walks into adulthood with skills that no textbook can fully teach.

A school that makes room for sports and arts alongside academics is not diluting education. It is completing it.
